It's important to distinguish between data recovery from a disk and disk repair.
Data recovery focuses on restoring your files from a damaged or non-functional disk, while disk repair means restoring it to fully functional state for further use.
Mechanically damaged disks are typically not repaired, due to high repair costs and limited reliability of repaired disks. In some cases where the disk fails due to firmware errors or service data damage, disk repair is possible. However, this process involves complete initialization and recalibration of service areas, leading to loss of all stored data.

Disconnect the drive immediately — do not keep trying different USB ports or cables.
If the drive was dropped, do not power it on — clicking sounds indicate head crash and each spin-up causes more damage.
Label the drive with the original USB cable type; some drives have proprietary connectors where standard cables will not work.

External drives typically contain a standard 2.5" or 3.5" HDD (or increasingly an SSD) inside a plastic or aluminium enclosure. For simple cases — broken USB port, dead power adapter, USB controller failure — we can extract the internal drive, bypass the enclosure, and read the data directly with professional tools.
For drives with internal hardware encryption (WD My Passport SE and similar), the encryption key is stored in the USB-to-SATA bridge chip. Swapping the internal drive into a different enclosure will not work — we need the original controller intact. In these cases we operate specialised firmware tools to extract the key before removing the drive.
We do not repair external drives for continued use. Our deliverable is your data on a new verified medium. The original external drive is typically physically destroyed or returned without data.
If your external drive is intermittently recognised, clicks, or shows wrong capacity in Windows/macOS, stop connecting it. Every mount attempt can trigger the operating system's file system repair routines (which should not run on failing hardware), and physical drives with clicking heads get worse with every spin-up.
For external drives that were dropped: clicking sounds almost always indicate head crash. Further power-on attempts risk scoring the platters and destroying the data permanently. Keep the drive unplugged and contact us — the longer you wait or the more you try, the harder the recovery.
